Nantana Blocks Election Commission and Constitutional Court Judges Selection, Sparks Protests

Bangkok: Chaos erupted in the Senate meeting as Nantana intervened to block the selection process of two Constitutional Court judges and one Election Commissioner, prompting heated protests. The meeting, chaired by General Kriangkrai Srirak, First Vice President of the Senate, was set to vote on approving the nominees after a secretive background investigation by the Standing Committee.

According to Thai News Agency, the nominees for the Constitutional Court judges included Professor Pol. Lt. Col. Sutham Chueaprakobkit from Mahidol University and Mr. Sarawut Songsivilai, former Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport. These candidates were chosen to replace outgoing judges due to their extensive experience and qualifications. However, the meeting was marred by accusations of unethical behavior and orders to favor certain candidates, as revealed by Senator Wutthipong.

Ms. Nantana used her right to challenge what she perceived as unethical standards in the selection process, leading to a heated debate. The meeting chairman, however, curtailed the debate by turning off microphones, intensifying the chaos. Lieutenant Commander Wuttipong Phongsuwan emphasized the integrity of the selected candidates but raised concerns about external influence in the selection process.

Senator Thewarit Maneechai highlighted the importance of presuming innocence until proven guilty and criticized the involvement of the Department of Special Investigation in pressuring other organizations. He warned against premature punishment and emphasized the need for independent oversight.

The meeting concluded with widespread debate among senators, reflecting the contentious nature of the selection process and the need for transparency and accountability in appointing high-ranking officials.
