New Center Established for Managing Thai-Cambodian Border Situation

Bangkok: The government has announced the establishment of a new "Center for the Prevention and Suppression of Crimes" (CSO) following the expiry of the previous directive by the Prime Minister. This move aims to ensure continued management of the Thai-Cambodian border situation.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, acting on behalf of the Prime Minister, signed Prime Minister's Office Order No. 275/2568. This order establishes the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Management Center (TCMS) to replace the expired directive, thereby maintaining seamless management of the border situation. The TCMS is structured under the leadership of the Deputy Minister of Defense as the Director, while the Secretary-General of the National Security Council, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior serve as Deputy Directors. The center includes high-ranking representatives from various ministries, security agencies, the Armed Forces Headquarters, the Royal Thai Police, the Public Relations Department, and the Intelligence Agency, along with relevant experts.

The TCMS is tasked with several key responsibilities. It will closely monitor, analyze, and assess the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, propose recommendations to the National Security Council, the Prime Minister, or the Cabinet, and integrate practices across all agencies to disseminate accurate information to the public. Additionally, the center has the authority to appoint subcommittees or working groups as necessary and is required to report performance results periodically to relevant agencies.

Operations at the center are guided by principles that emphasize resolving tensions through peaceful means, with respect for independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The center functions without interference from third countries or international organizations. Government agencies, state agencies, and state enterprises are expected to cooperate by providing information or documents as requested by the center. The National Security Council Office is tasked with administrative duties, including structuring, reporting, monitoring, and evaluation, adhering to the government's budget regulations.

Once the border situation normalizes, the center's director is required to report to the Prime Minister to rescind the order.
