Pheu Thai Alarmed by Bhumjaithai’s Swift Move for No-Confidence Motion

Bangkok: Pheu Thai expressed surprise at Bhumjaithai’s announcement of a cabinet reshuffle in less than two weeks, as they prepared to submit a no-confidence motion. Pheu Thai urged Bhumjaithai to act as a constructive opposition for three months rather than as a “vengeful party.”

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, advisor to the Prime Minister, commented on the Bhumjaithai Party’s swift actions after becoming the opposition. The party immediately initiated a motion of no confidence in line with Section 151, which requires the support of 1/5 of the existing MPs. Currently, this equates to 99 MPs, a number Bhumjaithai cannot achieve alone, necessitating backing from at least 30 other opposition parties.

Mr. Jirayu remarked that while a no-confidence motion is a democratic tool enshrined in the constitution, it is unusual for a coalition party to submit such a motion immediately after becoming the opposition due to dissatisfaction with a cabinet reshuffle. He expressed concerns that Bhumjaithai might act as a “vengeful party” rather than a constructive opposition within the democratic framework.

He further speculated on the potential involvement of the Prachachon Party, the only opposition group with sufficient numbers to submit the motion. Mr. Jirayu highlighted the absence of debate from Bhumjaithai in previous sessions and questioned whether the Pheu Thai Party would respond in kind or if rumors of alliances were true.

The People’s Party has called for the dissolution of the House, but a no-confidence motion could hinder this possibility. Mr. Jirayu stressed the importance of observing the stance of the opposition core party.

He emphasized the need for national unity to address global issues such as the Iran-Israel conflict and the Thai-Cambodian border situation. Mr. Jirayu also mentioned the tax issues concerning President Donald Trump and the government’s competitive efforts to stimulate economic growth, predicting positive outcomes in the third and fourth quarters.
