Bangkok: Academics predict that the People’s Party will maintain its stance in the upcoming prime ministerial vote, despite the Pheu Thai Party’s desperate new proposal to nominate Chaikasem Nitisiri and immediately dissolve parliament. This move is aimed at preventing Anutin Charnvirakul from becoming prime minister.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Stithorn Thananithichot from Chulalongkorn University commented on the Pheu Thai Party’s strategy, stating that the People’s Party is unlikely to change its position. This is due to a pre-existing agreement with Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, and altering their stance could be seen as a violation of their principles. The Pheu Thai Party’s latest proposal is viewed as a last effort to hinder Mr. Anutin’s nomination, as the party is committed to employing all possible tactics to delay the electoral process during tomorrow’s prime ministerial vote.
Dr. Wanwichit Boonprong of Rangsit University anticipates a prolonged session during tomorrow’s parliamentary vote for the prime minister. Despite both sides’ reluctance to give way, he believes that the vote will proceed as planned, with measures likely in place to ensure vote control.
The Pheu Thai Party’s approach has been criticized for its simplicity and desperation in its attempt to block Anutin from ascending to the premiership. By nominating Chaikasem Nitisiri and proposing an immediate dissolution of Parliament, the party aims to regain favor with the People’s Party, yet confidence appears to be waning. The People’s Party seems uninterested in this strategy, preferring to maintain control and focus on amending the referendum law. Dr. Wanwichit remains confident that the controlled vote will prevent any further delays, which could otherwise damage the Pheu Thai Party’s public image.
