Pichai Acknowledges Ongoing US Tax Negotiations

Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavijorn announced via social media that negotiations with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) remain unresolved, as he continues to pursue a 36% reduction in tariffs. He highlighted that the revised proposals aim to be satisfactory and balanced, providing benefits for the Thai populace.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pichai engaged in the second official discussion with the USTR through a video conference on July 17, 2025. Following prior submissions of updated proposals, additional suggestions were presented after consultations with multiple sectors. Mr. Pichai expressed confidence that the new proposals would meet U.S. expectations while ensuring advantages for the people and industries of Thailand.

The negotiations have included discussions and stress tests to evaluate the crisis's impact on business and agriculture, resulting in valuable insights. Many view this negotiation as an opportunity for Thailand to restructure its economy and enhance its framework. Mr. Pichai extended gratitude to all parties contributing to the proposal, emphasizing the collective desire for Thailand's continuous development.
