Ping River’s Water Level Drops Below Critical in Chiang Mai

Chiang mai: The Ping River’s water level this morning has dropped below the critical level after reaching a peak of nearly 4 meters. Chiang Mai remains safe from flooding as the river recedes.

According to Thai News Agency, water levels in the Ping River, which flows through Chiang Mai city, began to recede this morning. The Ping River at the P1 water level monitoring station near Nawarat Bridge in Chiang Mai city reached a peak of 3 meters and 93 centimeters between 10:00 PM and midnight. This is above the critical warning level of 3 meters and 70 centimeters, but still below the 4 meters and 20 centimeters above the flood barrier.

The river has continued to recede, averaging 7-8 centimeters per hour, as water levels in the north recede and there is no further rain. This morning, the Ping River at the P1 water level is 3 meters and 56 centimeters, well below the critical warning level. This is a relief to Chiang Mai residents, some of whom were concerned about a similar flooding event last year. The Ping River reached a record high of 5 meters and 30 centimeters, flooding Chiang Mai’s economic zone.

However, continued vigilance is still required from today until September 30th, as the Meteorological Department predicts that Tropical Storm Bualoi may cause heavy rain in the northern region.
