Promphong Urges Anutin to Collaborate with China on Long-Term Disaster and Flood Relief

Bangkok: Promphong Nopparit, former spokesman for the Pheu Thai Party, has called on Anutin Charnvirakul to engage in discussions with China to develop a sustainable strategy for disaster and flood relief. The appeal comes amid criticism of the government’s handling of severe flooding in various Thai provinces.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Promphong highlighted that the government, led by Anutin Charnvirakul, is currently grappling with heavy rainfall, leading to flooding in districts across Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Sawan, Singburi, Ang Thong, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, and Nonthaburi. Concerns have been raised about a potential repeat of the 2011 disaster, as heavy rains continue to affect the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. Residents in some areas have been submerged for prolonged periods, with local criticism mounting over the government’s water management strategies. The relief funds distributed have been deemed insufficient to cover damages, prompting calls for urgent government intervention to mitigate public suffering.

Promphong also noted dissatisfaction among MPs from parties supporting Prime Minister Anutin, as well as academics and other politicians, who have advocated for systematic flood management solutions. They emphasize the need for engineering solutions and the creation of waterways to prevent certain areas from becoming permanent flood-retention zones. Without such measures, storms are likely to continue causing significant damage, with fears that districts like Bang Rakam and Bang Ban could become perennial victims of flooding.

During his recent visit to China, Anutin had the opportunity to discuss China’s disaster response system, particularly in relation to flooding. Promphong suggested that Thailand could learn from China’s successful implementation of flood management strategies, including dam construction and water diversion systems. He stressed the importance of adapting these practices to suit Thailand’s needs.

Additionally, Promphong urged the government to adopt China’s approach to cracking down on scammers and cybercriminals. He advocated for decisive actions, such as asset seizures and stringent enforcement of laws, to deter criminal activities and reassure the international community that Thailand is not a haven for illicit activities. Promphong called for strengthened laws and the willingness of officials to enforce them, citing the need for tangible action from Anutin to fulfill the Bhumjaithai Party’s commitment to decisive governance.
