Bangkok: The Senate’s Tourism and Sports Committee has expressed strong disapproval of the government’s “Half-Half Thailand” program, citing its operational failure and mismanagement.
According to Thai News Agency, the committee raised concerns about the government’s decision not to utilize the previously successful “Paotang” application, which was effective in the “We Travel Together” project. Instead, a new company was contracted to run the “Half-Half Travel Thailand” program, leading to significant issues. Business operators have reported difficulties in withdrawing money, and many are hesitant to participate due to concerns about taxes and the complexity of the program.
Mr. Pisut Rattanawong, Chair of the Senate Committee on Tourism and Sports, led a meeting to address these issues, noting that the problems have persisted for nearly two weeks. The committee questioned the rationale behind not reviving the “Paotang” application, which had previously resolved such challenges. Mr. Chamlong Anantasuk, the committee’s spokesperson, emphasized the erratic functionality of the current program and the urgent need for government intervention.
The committee highlighted that these operational failures have directly impacted hotel operators nationwide. Many are still unable to claim funds from the previous “We Travel Together” project, deterring participation in the new initiative. Additionally, the lack of adequate communication from the government has led to misunderstandings among business operators and tourists.
To address these ongoing issues, the committee plans to summon Mr. Surawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, for an immediate explanation. The committee stressed the urgency of resolving these problems, which have adversely affected Thailand’s tourism sector for over two to three weeks.
