Bangkok: The Senate has voted in favor of appointing Narong Klanwarin to the Election Commission, marking a significant decision in the country’s electoral oversight body. The approval came during a Senate meeting led by Mr. Boonsong Noisophon, the Second Vice President of the Senate. The meeting, held in secret, focused on reviewing the report from the Standing Committee responsible for examining the background, conduct, and ethical behavior of nominees for the Election Commissioner position.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Boonsong posed a key question to the Senate members regarding the approval of Mr. Narong for the Election Commissioner role. Out of 187 members present, 165 voted in favor, while 1 member opposed the nomination, 20 abstained, and 1 chose not to vote. This decisive result confirmed Mr. Narong’s appointment to the Election Commission.
Mr. Narong Klanwarin, who currently serves as the head of the Supreme Court, will succeed Mr. Pakorn Mahannop on the Election Commission. Mr. Pakorn’s term is set to conclude upon reaching the age of 70 on February 9, 2025.
