Bangkok: Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin has responded to the Bhumjaithai Party’s decision to sue him following his support for a Pheu Thai Party MP candidate in Si Sa Ket Province. Somsak accused the Bhumjaithai Party of failing to address the drug issue during its tenure at the Ministry of Interior, which he claims has contributed to ongoing problems. He asserted that the lack of action by the former Interior Minister is evident to border villagers who understand the implications of the audio clip involving Prime Minister Yingluck.
According to Thai News Agency, Somsak’s remarks come in the wake of allegations that the Bhumjaithai Party, during its control of the Ministry of Interior, did not adequately tackle the drug problem and instead legalized cannabis, a decision he deemed irresponsible. He argued that the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Public Health, and Ministry of Interior share responsibilities in drug suppression operations, and the party’s decision to sue indicates an acknowledgment of inaction on their part.
Somsak emphasized the need for the Ministry of Interior to collaborate with provincial authorities, police, district chiefs, and local administrators to effectively address the drug issue. He expressed concern over the apparent misunderstanding of responsibilities and authority, which he believes has hindered progress. Despite the ongoing legal issue, Somsak remained optimistic about the election campaign, stating that feedback from Si Sa Ket Province indicates a clear understanding among the people regarding the situation.
Addressing the audio clip involving the Prime Minister and Samdech Hun Sen, Somsak noted that border villagers comprehend the message as a guideline for peaceful coexistence. However, he acknowledged that nationwide understanding of the issue varies and stressed the importance of collective efforts to clarify the situation for the public’s benefit.
Regarding the involvement of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra in assisting with campaign efforts, Somsak distanced himself, stating that these arrangements are party matters and that he is merely assisting with the campaign.
