Bangkok: The use of different map scales between Thailand and Cambodia has been a point of contention, with Cambodia citing the scales of 1:50,000 and 1:200,000 as potentially causing Thailand to lose land to Cambodia.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Chawit Srimanee from the Faculty of Social Sciences at Chiang Mai University provides insight into the implications of these differing scales. The scales in question are used in delineating borders between the two countries, with Cambodia’s use of a larger scale being a central issue in the ongoing dispute. The differences in scale can lead to discrepancies in the perceived size and location of land areas, which is critical in border demarcation.
The Thai government has been urged to address this issue to ensure that Thailand does not inadvertently lose land due to these cartographic differences. The understanding and resolution of such discrepancies are vital for maintaining accurate and fair border agreements between the neighboring countries.
