Phnom Penh: The first day of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meeting between Thailand and Cambodia proceeded positively, with both sides engaging in frank discussions. The meeting, which is set to conclude tomorrow, emphasized Thailand’s position on the authority of the International Court of Justice.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nikorndej Plangoon, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provided insights into the sixth meeting of the JBC. The Thai delegation, led by Mr. Prasarn Prasarnvinitchai, arrived in Phnom Penh and has been receiving continuous updates. A meeting was called by the Minister of Foreign Affairs to ensure close monitoring of the situation, following the Prime Minister’s directive for progress reports and instructions.
Mr. Nikorndej detailed that the meeting commenced with a preliminary discussion between the Thai-Cambodian presidents before transitioning to the full JBC meeting. The agenda included technical discussions, particularly the use of topographic surveying technology. The meeting is expected to continue into the next day, with both parties adhering closely to the agenda. The Thai side aims for the meeting to alleviate current tensions and foster sustainable solutions.

In response to inquiries about reported disputes, including the violation of the 2000 agreement at Channel 7, Mr. Nikorndej stated that discussions are ongoing and no details are available at this time. Regarding the alleged acceptance of a map by the committee chairman, Mr. Nikorndej claimed no knowledge of this issue.
