Bangkok: Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice and leader of the Prachachat Party, expressed confidence in the government’s ability to secure enough votes to pass the 2016 budget. He emphasized that recent discussions with coalition parties focused on public welfare rather than political positions or personal matters, underscoring a commitment to addressing economic and livelihood issues.
According to Thai News Agency, Thawee highlighted the government’s intention to place the public at the center of its problem-solving efforts, particularly concerning agriculture, farmer welfare, and public debt. He stressed the urgency of addressing corruption and reinforcing national security, while also noting the importance of revitalizing the tourism sector to benefit local communities.
Thawee also addressed concerns regarding the 2016 budget bill, stating that the expected votes surpass initial estimates, yet emphasized the need for parliamentary participation to ensure progress. Despite questions about potential changes in ministerial positions, he maintained that the primary focus remains on the people’s needs, avoiding any assumptions that might lead to conflict.
When questioned about his collaboration with General Sunai Prapuchanay, Thawee clarified that their recent field trip was pre-scheduled, with no discussions about Sunai’s potential candidacy for Minister of Defense. He humorously noted Sunai’s past as a special forces officer, working predominantly abroad.
Thawee further addressed the topic of cannabis regulation, advocating for its classification as a drug for medical use only, aligning with international norms. Citing a significant rise in treatment cases involving kratom and cannabis, he expressed concerns over the health risks associated with recreational use.
