The Upper House Witnesses Fierce Exchange Between Senators Over Independent Organizations Issue

Bangkok: The upper house of the Thai Senate witnessed a heated exchange between Senators Phisit Apiwatanapong and Nantana Nantvaropa during a meeting that centered around the selection of members for independent organizations. The discord escalated to the point where Phisit suggested Nantana seek medical attention, accusing her of persistently causing delays in the selection process. In response, Nantana expressed her dismay, stating that despite being punished by the public, she felt no remorse. Ultimately, Itthiphon Kaewthip received overwhelming support to join the independent organization, with the Senate approving his nomination with a significant majority.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting, presided over by Senate President Mongkol Surachat, focused on the approval of a nominee for the position of Attorney General. Mr. Ittiporn Kaewthip had already undergone a thorough vetting process by the Standing Committee, led by Senator Thawat Suraban. As the meeting progressed, Nantana took the floor to emphasize the importance of scrutinizing nominees for independent organizations. She recalled a previous incident where she faced criticism for repeatedly raising similar concerns, leading to public dissatisfaction and protests.

Nantana argued that her role as a senator was to safeguard public interests, urging her colleagues to pay heed to her concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest and the integrity of the selection process. She stressed that allowing senators accused of misconduct to vote on such critical matters could undermine the justice system and lead to undesirable outcomes. Nantana called for a delay in the voting process until all allegations against the senators were resolved.

Despite the tension, Mongkol attempted to maintain order, allowing Phisit to address Nantana’s remarks. Phisit criticized Nantana’s persistence, suggesting her behavior might indicate obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Mongkol intervened to remind the senators that the matter had been previously resolved, and urged them to focus on moving forward.

The confrontation continued, with both Nantana and Phisit refusing to back down. Mongkol eventually requested Phisit to retract his comments, which he did, while also insisting that Nantana cease further discussions on the matter. The meeting proceeded in a confidential session, resulting in a decisive vote in favor of Itthiphon Kaewthip’s nomination, with 172 senators supporting his appointment, 14 abstaining, and one not voting.

The approval marks a significant step in the selection process for independent organizations, despite the contentious debate that unfolded within the Senate.
