Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Several hundred people congregated outside the US Embassy in Jakarta on Friday during a peace rally held as a mark of protest following US President Donald Trumps statement recognizing Jerusalem as Israels capital.
Bearing the flags of Islamic community organizations and banners reading "Trump is enemy of humanity" and "Jerusalem will never belong to Israel," several hundred people staged a peace protest to express their support for the Palestinian people following the US move on Jerusalem.
"Trumps decision has violated international laws and could endanger the peace process in Palestine," Agus Sudarmaji, a spokesperson of the Al-Aqsa Working Group, remarked during the rally in Jakarta on Friday.
As a leader of a superpower, Trump has lost his mind, Sudarmaji noted.
"Jerusalem belongs to Palestine. We are all here to defend the rights of every Palestinian and independence is the right of every nation," he stated followed by protesters saying aloud "Allahuakbar."
During the rally, the protesters also called on the international and Muslim community to unite to protect Jerusalem, which houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islams holiest sites.
Representatives of the US Embassy in Jakarta also recorded the statements of several people representing the protesters on the US move on Jerusalem.
Trumps statement on Jerusalem has also triggered protests in Jordan, Turkey, Gaza, and the West Bank.
US President Trump, on Wednesday, formally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, thereby sparking widespread condemnation across the Muslim world.
"I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Trump noted in a speech at the White House.
Trumps decision fulfilled his campaign promise.
However, the international community views that the US move could impair any hope of reviving the peace process in Palestine.
Following Trumps declaration, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, on Thursday, condemned the US decision on Jerusalem.
"Indonesia strongly condemns the US unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and urges it to reconsider the decision," Widodo remarked in a press conference.
The leader of the worlds largest Muslim-majority nation noted that the US decision has violated several UN resolutions and could disrupt global security and stability.
