East Java toll road crash kills mother, kids

Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA) - A Honda Civic van heading to Kejapanan, Pasuruan District, East Java, crashed into a truck on Pandaan toll road on Thursday, killing a mother and her two kids, a senior police official said. The van was being driven by Dariyanto (39), the husband of Dewi Ferdiana (37). He might have fallen asleep at the wheel and lost control of the van which rear-ended the truck, bearing license plate B-9279-YS, Head of the East Java Police's Traffic Division Commissioner Dwi Sumrahadi Rakhmanto said.

Besides killing Dewi Ferdiana, the accident also claimed the lives of Syifa Aulia (10) and seven-month-old Adhan Wijaya while Dariyanto and his 1.5-year-old infant, Rehan Wijayanto, survived the car crash, Rakhmanto said.

The truck was parked on the shoulder of the toll road KM 772/B, he added.

In the past two weeks, Indonesia has witnessed several fatal traffic accidents.

On Saturday evening, December 21, the Agro Parahyangan passenger train hit a van at a railway crossing on Bosih Road in Wanasari Village, Cibitung Sub-district, Bekasi District, West Java Province, killing seven passengers in the van.

"All of them died on the spot," Bekasi Metropolitan Police Spokesman Adjunct Commissioner Sunardi stated.

The accident resulted in the deaths of the 51-year-old driver and six other people in the van: Watinah (50), Santi (30), Didit (12), Yanto, Syarufudin (49), and Yanda (32).

They are all residents of the Utan Kayu Selatan Village, Matraman Sub-district, East Jakarta.

"The bodies are being kept at the Bekasi District Public Hospital's morgue," he stated.

The accident took place after the driver of the blue Sigra van, bearing license plate B 1778 FZI, not only ignored the warning from locals about the oncoming train but also the signal at the Bosih railroad crossing gate, Sunardi remarked.
