Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, acting as Prime Minister, issued a directive during a cabinet meeting to address misconduct within the monkhood. He instructed Suchart Tancharoen, Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, to collaborate with police and relevant agencies to apprehend individuals involved with “Sika K.”
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham highlighted the issue of monks violating monastic discipline, noting that several high-ranking monks have already disrobed. However, suspicions remain about other monks’ involvement, impacting public faith in Buddhism nationwide.
Mr. Phumtham urged Mr. Suchart, who oversees the Office of Buddhism, to work with the Supreme Sangha Council and the Royal Thai Police to promptly identify and hold accountable all parties implicated in the misconduct. He emphasized the need to follow legal and monastic procedures while considering legal amendments to address all forms of wrongdoing comprehensively. This includes ensuring transparency and accountability in temple fund management to prevent damage to Buddhism.
Additionally, Mr. Phumtham called for the Ministry of Culture to collaborate with the Office of Buddhism, the Ministry of Education, and other relevant bodies to educate the public on authentic Thai Buddhist practices and the appropriate conduct between laypeople and monks, thereby promoting morality and societal harmony.
