Siripong Highlights Border Situation Amid International Focus

Sa kaeo: Siripong emphasized the need for careful consideration of the border situation, as international attention is closely monitored. He revealed Cambodia’s strategy of using children and the elderly at the forefront is pressuring Thailand to move forward. He emphasized that the government has given the authority to the local teams to carry out their operations and is ready to fully support the mission.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat stated regarding the Thai-Cambodian border situation in Sa Kaeo Province that the government is currently facing a critical juncture. The ASEAN Summit will be held in Malaysia from October 25-28, in which the President of the United States and other ASEAN leaders will attend. The President has offered to act as a “negotiator” between Thailand and Cambodia.

Mr. Siripong stated that this means that “from now on, Thailand’s actions must be especially cautious.” A leader like Donald Trump aims to seek cooperation, but at the same time, he holds economic power. For example, the 19% tax relief Thailand has received is only a guideline and subject to change depending on the stances of each party. Therefore, the stance of a country’s leader is very important. The image presented to international media affects global perception. This is the prime minister’s role: to preserve the nation’s image and interests.

The government spokesman added that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul “expressed deep concern for the people in the border areas.” He has ordered all agencies to closely monitor the situation, ensure the safety of citizens and officials, and avoid confrontations that could be used as a political tool by the other side.

In the case of Khmer Times, they inquired about news that Thailand is preparing to push Cambodians out of the disputed area in Sa Kaeo Province, which will be investigated for human rights violations.

Mr. Siripong said the Prime Minister clarified that the government never set a deadline for Cambodians to leave the area. The assessment and prior communication of the situation came from those directly responsible on the ground, who had assessed the situation that way at the time. However, with Cambodia’s use of human shields and the international community increasingly focused on Thailand, the various plans in place need to be adjusted. The grounds have already assessed what should and should not be done.

“The government confirms its readiness to cooperate with all parties and emphasizes legal action, from light to heavy, within the framework of justice and humanity,” said Mr. Siripong.

The government spokesman added that Cambodia’s trump card is using civilians as human shields, including children, women, the elderly, and pregnant women, to challenge Thailand’s humanitarian stance. This leaves Thailand with very limited options. “We must understand their game and be prudent, rather than letting the problem escalate and put Thailand at a disadvantage in the long run,” he said.

Mr. Siripong concluded by stating that the world is watching this issue. The government urged the public to be assured that the Thai government prioritizes national interests. Prime Minister Anutin “cares for all Thai people, especially those in border areas,” and is ready to fully support the efforts of field officials to ensure a peaceful and safe resolution of the situation.
