“Suang” Extends Invitation to “Thaksin” for Lecture Amidst Cabinet Reshuffle Discussions

Bangkok: Surawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports and Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, has clarified that the dinner with coalition parties this evening is simply a routine meeting following the recent cabinet reshuffle. He also confirmed the invitation extended to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to deliver a lecture, emphasizing that Thaksin will not exert any influence over the government.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surawong addressed questions regarding any special agenda for the dinner, stating that the gathering is a straightforward opportunity for coalition party members to converse after the cabinet changes. He explained that the Pheu Thai Party leader proposed the dinner to facilitate discussions among MPs in the coalition government.

While acknowledging the need to address issues related to the quorum in the House of Representatives, which has faced challenges thrice, Mr. Surawong noted that discussions at the party leader and secretary level have already taken place. The focus now is on fostering good relations among coalition party MPs.

On the matter of the party dinner and the involvement of Thaksin Shinawatra, Mr. Surawong admitted to inviting Thaksin as a special speaker. He highlighted that the party values Thaksin’s experience as a former leader in government formation, especially during political crises, and is open to any advice he may offer.

Addressing concerns about Thaksin potentially influencing the government, Mr. Surawong firmly stated that there is no risk of such influence. He stressed that political parties operate through discussions and differing opinions, but ultimately, party resolutions are binding. He reassured that no individual, including Thaksin, has the power to issue orders within the party, as it functions as a cohesive organization.
